Bangalore vs Hyderabad vs Mumbai: Where Should Your Startup Set Up?

Most founders answer this with where they already live, and that is usually the right answer. But if you genuinely have a choice, here is what separates the three, starting with the numbers we can actually measure.

What a desk costs

Median coworking price per seat per month, from live listings on Dexwork:

For a ten person team that is ₹1.15 lakh a month in Mumbai against about ₹80,000 in Bengaluru and ₹85,000 in Hyderabad. Over a year, ₹4.2 lakh. Meeting rooms follow the same pattern: a median hourly rate of ₹999 in Bengaluru, ₹1,000 in Mumbai and ₹900 in Hyderabad.

Notice how small these differences are next to salaries. Workspace is usually 6% to 10% of what a startup spends. Do not pick a city on it.

Bengaluru

Take it if you are building software. The depth of engineering talent is not close to matched anywhere else in India, most active early stage investors are here or visit constantly, and the density of other founders means you can get an honest answer to almost any question over coffee.

The costs. Salaries are the highest in the country for engineering roles and rising. Traffic is genuinely bad, so your office location decides who will work for you: Koramangala to Whitefield in the evening is a soul destroying trip. Attrition is high, because your engineer has four other offers within a two kilometre radius.

Areas: Koramangala and HSR Layout for early stage, Indiranagar for consumer and design, Whitefield and ORR for enterprise and GCC adjacency.

Hyderabad

Take it if you want Bengaluru's talent pool at lower cost and lower churn. HITEC City and Gachibowli hold a very large GCC and enterprise engineering base, salaries run below Bengaluru for comparable roles, and people stay in jobs longer. The state government is unusually easy to deal with, and T-Hub is a real ecosystem rather than a press release.

The costs. Fewer early stage investors on the ground, so you will travel for fundraising. A thinner layer of very senior product and design people. The startup community is smaller, which cuts both ways.

Areas: HITEC City, Gachibowli and Madhapur hold most of the workspace inventory.

Mumbai

Take it if your customers are companies rather than developers. Banks, insurers, media, advertising, listed corporates and the entire financial services industry sit here. If you are building fintech, insurtech, B2B sales into large enterprises or anything media adjacent, being in the room matters more than the rent.

The costs. The most expensive workspace of the three, roughly 40% above Bengaluru at the median, and the highest cost of living by a distance. Commutes are long, though the train and metro network makes them more predictable than Bengaluru's roads. Engineering talent is available but thinner than in the south.

Areas: BKC and Lower Parel for the corporate address, Andheri and Powai for better value with a strong startup presence.

Choose by what you are building

The option nobody puts on the shortlist

Pick two. Coworking makes a split team practical in a way leases never did: eight seats in Hyderabad for the engineering team and three in Mumbai near your customers is one conversation, not two lease negotiations. Pune and Gurgaon, both at about ₹8,500, are also serious options that get overlooked because they are not in the headline debate.

Before you decide

Ask three questions. Where do the ten people I most want to hire live? Where do my first twenty customers sit? And can I raise money without moving? If the answers point to different cities, follow the customers, and hire remotely for everything else.
